In the world of collectibles, you will be hard pressed to find a group of collectors more fanatical than doll collectors. Doll collecting has grown into one of the greatest collectible hobby with new doll artists coming on the scene all the time. Of course there are established artists of dolls that every doll collector knows or will come to find out about and the dolls that are being collected range from ancient antiques to new dolls fresh off from the factory. Doll collectors seem to be of two types however, those who proudly let their dolls overrun their entire home, sometimes building complete outbuildings to house them, to those who like to keep it their little secret, somehow embarrassed to let people know that they still play with dolls perhaps?

Whether you are just beginning your doll collection or have been fortunate enough to inherit one, you will need to know a few things about the practice of doll collecting and trading so that you won’t overpay for dolls or get taken when you sell yours. There are many books, which list the value of different types of dolls by different artists, but you should know that these book values are based on a doll which is in mint condition. There are several factors which can detract from the value of your dolls which you should be aware of when buying or selling. Inspect your dolls for imperfections, any of which could detract from the value. Hairline cracks, missing fingers, limb replacements, these can all lower the value of your dolls. If you have any sort of documentation or papers with your doll, these can add to your value, when purchasing, try to pick up dolls with credentials or the story of where the doll came from. Dolls that are signed are much more valuable than those without, purchase signed dolls whenever possible.

You can often pick up dolls at auctions, but it is extremely important to inspect the dolls before you bid. Make sure you have previously scoped out the value of the dolls you plan to bid on so that you don’t get carried away and bid for more than the doll is worth. Many times, dolls at auctions are there because they have been altered or repaired in some way. Most auctions are required to disclose any known defects but there are also those who operate on an ‘as is’ basis. Take a good look at any dolls you plan on bidding for, even if you have to make someone take it out of a box.

Once you have purchased a doll, it is imperative to keep it protected and in good condition. Sunlight and dust can ruin your doll and her clothing so be sure to keep them in a darkened room in cases or with a good air filtrations system.

There are hundreds of doll clubs, groups, newsletters and magazines around the country that will help keep you up to date on current trends and events and you should avail yourself of as much information as you can get your hands on. Doll collecting can be fun and addicting and a good investment if you do it right. Don’t forget to play with your dolls from time to time!
