So, you want to advance your skills? If you don't have the cash for school or training, there is a way for you to learn new skills while giving back, and it's free!

Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills. It's easy, it's fun, and it will boost your spirit and confidence in ways you never thought possible!

The kinds of skills you want to gain will help you determine your ideal volunteer opportunity. If you're an administrative assistant looking for a high-tech job, chances are you'll do better working for a nonprofit association rather than a hospital. Technology is not used in many organizations, such as children's hospitals. But there are many places that DO use it.

The best way to determine where to volunteer is to call the nonprofit in your area and ask them what kinds of opportunities are available. The best way to approach them is to call and ask them, "I'm looking for opportunities to work in __________ (your desired field) Do you have a use for this? I'm just starting out, but I'm willing to learn the ropes!"

Many volunteer opportunities need you to commit to a certain number of hours a week. Make time to learn your new skills. When you have learned enough about your selected skills, you can also have the bonus of using the volunteer coordinator as a reference, or applying for a paying job in their organization! You'll feel great about yourself as well as your skills by volunteering your way to success.
